Prevalence of Asthma in Michigan

  • 233,894 children less than 18 years (9.1%) currently have asthma. [1]

  • 683,693 adults 18 years and older (9.0%) currently have asthma. [2]

  • The asthma prevalence for adults (9.0%) is slightly higher than that for the United States (8.1%). [2,3]

  • The asthma prevalence in Michigan is significantly higher for adult females (11.3%) than adult males (6.5%).

  • 8.3% of white adults currently have asthma. 10.9% of black adults currently have asthma.

  • Asthma prevalence for adults decreases with increasing income. The prevalence for those earning less than $20,000 is significantly higher than those earning $75,000 or more.
